I've asked the lilies to stay the night

Still smitten. I had to ask the lilies in to stay the night--and they have actually been here most of the week now. Funny how that happens. But with them here to keep me company, they make all the time spent in the red chair so much better. I am no longer alone with the lilies there (not that I ever was-- what with a 5 year old wearing a superman cape leaping cirque-du-soleil style from the sofa to the floor and back again one is never, EVER alone).

Stopping to Smell the Flowers and Other Follies of Love...

If I seem distant and inattentive lately, dear blog readers, please forgive me. You have to understand something--my garden is blooming. And really, after years of wooing it with new seedlings, transplanting, dividing and generally fussing over it during moments I could wrestle free from travel for work--well, it is bestowing its considerable charms upon me. I mean, the garden has had points of loveliness in previous years, but this year it could break your heart with its sweet-smiling, winking and flirting beauty--so beautiful that I almost had to write it a love poem and send it a dozen roses (but are more flowers really the right gift to show your love to your garden? I wasn't sure so I settled for some weeding and a long cool drink of water straight from the hose.)

Are you still unconvinced of its intoxicating charms? Come, let me introduce you...
(white tango lily)
(crimson pixie lily)
(claire de lune clematis)
(ligularia with japanese ferns and lobed hosta)
(yellow tango lily)
(pink lilies with blackout lilies in background)
(jack-in-the-pulpit--or, voodoo lily as I prefer to refer to it)
(jackmanii clematis)
(casa blanca lily)
(turk's cap tiger lily)
See what I mean? How can I possily fail to resist? But, alas, my garden is fickle and its love is ever fleeting as summer wanes. So, I have to revel in it while I can--before it turns to withering leaves, dropping petals, and dying blooms. But for now, I have its lush love and charm and I am at its mercy. You understand, right?

Alien Summer Squash and X-Rated Lilies

Ever seen a summer squash like this? My husband thinks it looks like a UFO. It is a variety of summer squash that apparently hails from Yugoslavia--it was one of thos impulse buys at the Friends Plant Sale I buy my seedlings at every year. I mean, I love summer squash, so why not something a little Yuogslavian? The only problem is, I have no idea what to do with it. Do any of you know? Is there some special way you are supposed to prepare Yugoslavian Summer Squash? Do I merely need to drink lots of hard, home-brewed liquor--like rakija--while cooking? Does it taste like chicken--or like all other summer squash? Anyone got a good recipe for this sorta squash? (and yes, those are the standard non-descript zucchinis lounging modestly in the background--we already ate those cuz I know how to cook them).

In other summer news, all our Oriental and Asiatic lilies seem to blooming at once this year--and just as I am am embarking upon two weeks of travel for work--bastards (at work, not the lilies). But here are two of my faves:

This is one is a Blackout Lily. So gorgeously malevolent looking.
And this sexy little number is called a Centerfold Lily--yep, that's right. Better not let the kiddies look too closely at this one or child protective sevices may be on your doorstep--or worse, some evangelical christian fundmentalist group who are gonna censor this flower.

Summertime Ether

All of my best-made intentions around Bitty Bebe making have somehow managed to dissipate this weekend into the ether of summer...instead, I have found myself lured outside repeatedly and then suddenly consumed by the need to stake the tomatoes (this is our backfence kitchen garden--we grow eggplant, gypsy peppers, sweet banana peppers, fennel, scallions, 3 varieties of tomatoes and 2 varieties of summer squash--my handy husband built the boxes)...
weed the flower bed... poke around the pots of herbs outside the kitchen door--like they are all good little children in need of my praise and attention.

And then weeding and poking led to filling up the kiddie pool for my boy, which led to the need to get out bowls of cherries for eating...
and then a lunch of salad caprese... and then fruity ice cream sundaes (fat-free frozen yogurt, fresh pineapple, strawberries, almonds and shredded coconut over it all...like ambrosia but better)...and, well, now the whole afternoon is about gone. I did notice while eating my salad and strolling the halls of Etsy that
A Little Sprout had one of her adorable City Bear Girls for sale. Yes, in keeping with my doll obsession, I already own one--but what I really wanted to do was to tell the world about her dolls and how perfectly wonderful they are--so finely made and they arrive at your doorstep in these sweet brown paper packages... and when I bought my second doll--Chloe--from Sara, she even made a little sleep sack and pillow and included these with the doll. How sweet is that? So, go check out the shop if you are interested in biying one of her dolls--but run, don't walk, as her stuff goes FAST.
