June Toy Society Drop

This is my June Toy Society Drop. He was made from the Peanut, the Wee Elephant pattern, designed by Hillary Lang (of the lovely Wee Wonderfuls) in the book Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson. (and I love that book. Everything friggin thing about it screams LOVELY. And I might add that I don't even quilt--if that means anything to you.)I decided to do my June Toy Society drop tonight en route to the grocery store, while taking the Greenway--a cross-city biking path here in Minneapolis. So, I stopped here, on the Martin Olav Sabo bridge over Minnesota State Highway 55. It is one of my favorite parts of the Greenway and despite the climb to get up the bridge, one of my favorite parts of the ride when I am heading that direction. So, Peanut the Wee Elephant ended up here.
Moored somewhat precariously to a piece of wire cabling, looking down over the Sunday evening traffic. (yes, this is evening in Minnesota in the summer--it stays light here until 9:00pm during the summer months. And yes, Beeper is in the Burley bike carrier there--happily reading comic books, oblivious to his mama leaving toys around town at random)And so we bid adieu to my sixth drop on behalf of the Toy Society as part of my year long commitment (read more here and see all my earlier toys I made and dropped here) to make a monthly drop. (And no, you need not make such a ridiculous commitment if you are interested in dropping something you made yourself for the Toy Society--you need only do it once really. I'm just spaz and have an achievement orientation that likes to rear its ugly head and command me to do things like this...I suppose this has something to do with why Mr Beeper likes to call me Hurricane Holly--a force of nature to be reckoned with)

Summer Salad Recipe

This is one of my favorite summer salads--it contains the well-matched feta and strawberries--but also my version includes glazed walnuts, scallions and a balsamic honey vinaigrette--all best served on a bed of some sort of robustly flavored greens.

I like to serve it with a warm loaf of french bread and some european-style butter and a glass of red wine.

And those glazed walnuts in the recipe? Double the recipe and keep some extra around for serving with cheese for an evening snack.

Easy. Simple. Delicious. Now you go and enjoy it. You can download the recipe for salad, vinaigrette, and glazed walnuts here:

Hankie Sentiments

This was my father's day gift to Mr Beeper--3 handmade linen handkerchiefs, embroidered along the edge with Beeper's own words, in his own writing (sort of--I mean, half his writing, half mine, really, since Beeper doesn't yet know how to write --you see, I wrote the words in yellow marker that he dictated to me, and then he traced over them.)The note really happened first--as its own initiative a couple of weeks ago while Mr Beeper was away on a camping trip. I just offered to help Beeper write a note to Mr Beeper for father's day and he eagerly took up that task--dictating word for word what you see above with no input from me, then tracing over my writing in a variety of felt tip maker colors (everything is multi-colored in Beeper's world lately, every thing he writes or colors looks like a rainbow threw up on it--which I only mean in the most loving way because I do think it is friggin adorable). And then I had this totally seperate kind of stupid idea that I would make Mr Beeper a tie--yes, a neck tie, even though Mr Beeper only has occasion to wear a tie like once a year. But it seemed so Father's Day appropriate and then I actually saw a tutorial on how to make one on The Purl Bee. But good sense finally overcame me and I realized I should make him something he could actually use--because Mr Beeper is above all other things practical and sensible (hence the reason why I own a Volkswagon Jetta today and not the Mini Cooper that I really, really wanted--but that's another issue...). So, handkerchiefs. The marriage of Beeper's sentiments, and my handiwork--in a rainbow of colors, ala Beeper mode. Perhaps it does not seems so sweet to sneeze into something made so lovingly for you, but I don't care because when I decided to make these I only envisioned Mr Beeper keeping one of these in his pocket, hidden there much of the day, unearthed for a sneeze (and if you knew Mr Beeper, he is sneezey--allergies), but then the unexpected smile the sight of these words might bring to him, the little lift of love from me and Beeper, wherever Mr Beeper might be. Happy father's day, B. We sure do love you.

The Cloth Napkin Project

I am suddenly hellbent on making cloth napkins--not just a set, but a whole friggin buttload of them. And why not? I mean, we can lessen our paper towel useage, and cloth napkins are so much lovelier. They are what our grandparents used growing up, are friendlier to our earth, and are so, so much lovelier. So, I have this plan to make cloth napkins all summer--different materials, different styles, some simple, some a bit embellished. And this is where I began...I chose reproduction 1930's feedsack patterns (many of them from the Aunt Grace line--you can find some fabrics from this collection at Reprodepot--found here)--and ric-rac for the edges. I wanted something that actually did remind me of my Grandma Keller and all of her sweet sisters. I also chose to back these with some white muslin--just to give them a nice heft, and to make them a little sturdier which could be good for picnic use.And while I love the look of ric-rac, I also hate working on it because I always seem to sew it in wopperjawed. But this is the solution I found:
  1. First, I bought all fat quarters for these (and cut the muslin to fit each). I sewed the rickrack on the front side of the fabric, a half inch from the edge, all the way around.
  2. Then I pinned the muslin and the patterned fabrics together, right sides facing in, and sewed them together along the stitching where I sewed in the rickrack--leaving a 4 inch slot open so I could turn it right side out.
  3. Then I turned it right side out, pressed it all neat and flat, and sewed around the edge again, about 1/2 inch in. Napkin done.

So, I have one set of 8 napkins complete...my plan is to make about 30 or so more so we can use our napkins with wild abandon and not worry about doing laundry every second. Yeah, I am serious about this cloth napkin business...

Sunday Morning Breakfast: Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Muffins

Do yourself a favor and bake a batch of these tomorrow morning. So simply delicious--and full of lovely whole grains without being a sad, dry lifeless thing. You don't even need to consider butter on these (although if you are me, you might be really tempted to put some peanut butter on these...but that's just me)--they really are soft and luscious as is with just enough gooey melty chocolate inside and a not too intense banana flavor. And that step in the recipe instructing you to toast the oats?--Don't skip it (although you could, if you really wanted to)--it give the oats such a lovely nutty flavor that complements both the banana and chocolate. Right click on or highlight the recipe card above to copy and save it to your own computer. But I was wondering--do you prefer I put recipes up in this format? Or would you rather I created a link to a pdf file of the recipe that you could click and download? Or neither?--just write up the recipe in the blog entry? Let me know what you think...I aim to please.

Tutorial: A Dozen Animal Sewing Cards Reprised

Last year I made a little sewing card tutorial, but I decided to create a reprisal of it--mainly so you could access some downloadable instuctions, as well as the graphics. And of course, in the process of creating the new instructions document, I decided to modify some of the original instructions to make it a bit simpler. Then, I also changed up some of the graphics I had in the original set--now there a dozen animal images with dotted cutting lines, as well as punch hole indicators.

And in case you are interested about some of the supplies I used in the photos above...here is what I used and where I purchased it:
I made a set for us yesterday and it took me about an hour--so this is a simple, easy project you can make in an evening or do over the weekend and involve the kiddies. Here is your link to download the project: DOWNLOAD SEWING CARD TUTORIAL

Things are changing around here...

You may notice that things have been changing around here at Chez Beeper Bebe. We are going through a bit of a remodel. I just got tired of all the damn clutter and had to toss it out and tidy things up a bit. I wanted something cleaner, brighter, more organized. Who needs the flash of all those widgets anyway? I mean, maybe they didn't bother you, but personally, I needed someplace a little more peaceful feeling than it was...not that it isn't a constant buzz of activity around here anyway...

And also, I hope you will find it easier to come over and settle in and have a look around. I have put a whole slew of vintage labels over there on the left (got these from Just Something I Made--you can find them here) that will link you to recently created archives of downloads (just a few out there right now, but I have big plans to add more downloadable projects every month from here on out) and recipes, as well as my lists of links to favorite blogs, craft resources, and then other links to my Etsy shop, my Flickr photos, etc.

So, the remodel is mostly complete--although a new header is still in the works...but that may be a while in coming since I have about 12 other projects I am trying to work through at the moment. But, in the meantime, please continue to come over and put your feet up and let me pour you a nice tall one of the latest-whatever-is-going-on-around-here. I'll even make it a double if you've had a particularily hard day.
And did I mention that it is almost my one-year anniversary of this blog? Yeah, it is--yet another reason for the remodel. But in the coming year you can look forward to at least monthly project downloads, some Beeper Bebe plushie patterns for your own personal use, many all new original plushie designs made from secondhand materials, some give-a-ways for my charming and lovely readers, loads more recipes (with a downloadable recipe card for each), and more projects you can do with the kiddies. Plus all the usual snarky Chez Beeper Bebe fun, of course.
So, I hope you will keep on stopping by because I always have room for one more.

Recipe: Chicken Avocado Alfalfa Wrap

This is one of my favorite summertime sandwich-meals. You know, for those nights when you come home and have no idea what in the hell to cook, and also you don't really feel like cooking anyway so you want something, quick, tasty, easy--and in an ideal world, sort of healthy. This is where this little wrap sandwish comes in for me...1) Whip up some fresh guacamole and slather onto a tortilla.2. Top with a handful of sprouts3. Shred some sharp white cheddar on top4. Saute some boneless chicken breast and toss that on top of everything. Wrap it up, baby, and enjoy. Dinner, done, 15 minutes flat.
And here's a little recipe card for you: DOWNLOAD CHICKEN WRAP RECIPE

Really, the best thing about these instant sort of dinners is that you now have extra time to pour yourself some lovely little summer cocktail, sit on the back step and listen to the crickets...

LMNOP

Do you download your own personal copy of LMNOP quarterly? If not, you should. Not that I am advocating anything here--but I guess I am. I love it. And I am not so attached to magazines about STUFF--but I just find the STUFF in LMNOP to be really inspiring and it makes me want to design more of my own STUFF.This quarter's maagazine is dedicated to the alphabet. How rad is that? The alphabet? Is there anything cooler? Really. I love the alphabet.
So, you should go download your own copy of LMNOP if you have not done so already. And yes, it is yours for NOTHING. Yep, free. Not many things in this world look as great as this PDF magazine and are free...at least not anything you can go to RIGHT NOW and download RIGHT NOW for absolutely free. So check it out--you can get the latest issue right here.
All photos and images in this post copyright of LMNOP.
